South Dakota Spring Snow goose hunting Tips and Tactics
-Spring Snow Goose hunting in South Dakota with rolling hills, large grain fields, and ample water supply makes S.D. one of the best places to hunt large masses of migrating lesser snows.
-South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, and Arkansas are major staging areas for migrating spring snow geese. This is your best bet in finding hunt able numbers.
-Weather is a big key to spring snow goose hunting! For best success watch the weather and plan accordingly for your hunt.
-Goose Xperts Run 1000- 3000 decoys per field! Knowing cost of this many decoy's isn't practical for a person wanting to hunt these snow geese you can still have a good hunt with 400- 500 decoys. The reason we use large spreads is to hide hunters and gain big draw to the field we are hunting.
-The ideal equation in our mind is 20% sentry decoys blue and whites, 80% white feeders or headless decoys, and 20% of blue goose decoys. This seems to give your spread a great salt and pepper look. If you are hunting a pasture pond try adding a mix of blue and whites to a pond is worth gold even if its only a couple dozen.
-Electronic caller is a must! We run 6 speakers. 4 by the blinds and 2 down wind 50 to 100 yards
-Set the main bunch of decoys around the blinds and 30 yards upwind. Next make two long legs about 500 yards down wind. Lastly sprinkle groups and singles through out the center of the spread. The Snow Geese will follow the loose decoys up to your blinds.
-Rotary machine or not? They definitely help when the wind goes down, but if you are on a budget a few long poles with lander snow goose flags will do just as well.
-Find a spot to hunt under the main migration, and you too will have success.
